An "incongruous" structure erected outside a Stevenage restaurant without planning permission has been removed after discussions at a Stevenage Borough Council planning meeting.

The structure was erected at the Tranquil Turtle in Symonds Green Conservation Area in October last year to cover the outdoor seating area of the premises.

It had been constructed from scaffolding, with a corrugated sheet metal roof and plastic sheeting on the side.

A report by a Stevenage Borough Council planning officer said it was "an unsympathetic and incongruous design, which does not reflect the architectural characteristics of the host property".

Stevenage Borough Council’s staff served the site owner with a Planning Contravention Notice in October 2022.

At a meeting last week, the planning committee was told that Tranquil Turtle had promised to take the structure down on or before Wednesday, February 22.

Councillors agreed if the structure isn’t taken down on or before that date, they have three months to remove it entirely before the local authority takes action.
