As the days get longer and the warmer weather arrives, staying inside and watching movies isn't the most appealing option. But, cosying up at an outdoor cinema with the sweet summer breeze may be more enticing...

Hertfordshire is home to some beautiful movie spots, where the blooming flowers and historic buildings make the movies all the more atmospheric. 

We've compiled a list of the best Hertfordshire outdoor cinemas and theatres that you can enjoy this Summer.

1. Screen on the Green

Screen on the Green will take place in Welwyn Garden City.

The free event will take place at Howardsgate this August.

Over the span of three days, multiple popular movies will be showcased for the community to enjoy.

This year's movies will be screened on Thursday, August 17 to Saturday, August 19.

2. Immersion Theatre

Immersion Theatre will be coming to Knebworth House in August for a garden show.

The beautiful backdrop will be host of an night of live performance in the great outdoors. 

Previously, performances have included Rapunzel, The Three Musketeers, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

A showing of The Wizard of Oz has been announced for August 24 at the stately home. Tickets are available at ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/immersion-theatre

3. The Luna Cinema

Quiet nights at the elegant gardens of Knebworth House and Highfield Park in St Albans will transform into an open-air cinema venue.

On offer at Highfield Park is noughties classic Mean Girls, on Thursday, June 22, Top Gun: Maverick on Friday, June 23, and Magic Mike's Last Dance on Saturday, June 24. Book tickets at thelunacinema.com/venue/highfield-park/

Luna Cinema will also showcase blockbuster movies at Knebworth House. Screenings are: The Great Gatsby on Wednesday, July 5, Elvis on Thursday, July 6, Top Gun: Maverick, Friday, July 7, and classic Dirty Dancing on Saturday, July 8.

4. Roman Theatre Open Air Festival

A wealth of productions will be on show at the Roman Theatre Open Air Festival, at the Roman Theatre of Verulamium.

From June 5 to September 6, there will be something for everyone to enjoy at the scenic outdoor theatre.

From opening night (June 5) to July 29, OVO is set to present a musical version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet set in 1998 Belfast.

The theatre company is also set to presents the first co-production with Pitlochry Festival Theatre or Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Lipstick, Ketchup and Blood, by Lesley Hart, from June 13 to 18.

Artistic director Adam Nichols will direct a new production of Noel Cowards Private Lives from June 23 to August 19.

More performances include Much Ado About Nothing, The Railway Children and Little Women.

5. St Albans Film Festival

Located at St Albans Cathedral, the festival is fully packed with family fun.

The festival will showcase multiple classic movies that even the harshest critic will enjoy.
