St Albans and Stotfold optometrist Paul Adler is celebrating four decades in the field.

The practitioner started his own independant practice in 1984, having began his career in 1980.

Mr Adler moved to St Albans in 2006, and started 'Paul Adler Optometrist' after noticing a closed down Red Cross depot that was up for lease.

Reflecting on the time, Paul said: "I wrote a business plan on a brown paper envelope, I got a bit of advice from some people locally, placed a bid within the week and it got accepted and I suddenly found myself with the lease and had to do something about it, so the practice has just grown from there."

Speaking of his route into optometry, Paul added: "We weren’t particularly wealthy growing up and I think I just wanted to be the first person in my family to go to university.

“I think when you underachieve slightly at school, you just work harder and keep working hard and you suddenly find that you know things, but you do forget a bit how to relax and not work.”
