It's time to have your say on proposals on the future of Stevenage Old Town Hight Street after improvements plans were unveiled.

Hertfordshire County Council is proposing a host of changes to "not just to ensure businesses continue to thrive, but so that all residents can access them and to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and easier".

Among the plans is a "plaza style area near TJ’s Café and Simmons Bakers, with wider pavements, plants and trees and potential for more seating", while the mini-roundabout at the south end of the High Street would be replaced with a priority junction.

A full list of the proposed changes, and artist impressions, can be found on our map below:

Residents can have their say online until June 11, while HCC will also be hosting two drop-in events where you can find out more about the High Street proposals and ask any questions you may have:

  • Thursday, May 25, from 3pm to 7pm at the Cromwell Hotel (Bourchier Suite), High St, Stevenage SG1 3AZ
  • Tuesday, June 6, from 3pm to 7pm at Springfield House Community Centre (Oak Lounge), High St, Stevenage SG1 3EJ

"The Old Town High Street project aims to create a safer, more pleasant destination for everyone to enjoy and spend more time, whilst making it easier and more convenient for people to walk, wheel and cycle in the area," read a statement from HCC.

"We want to understand your initial thoughts on our current proposals.

"After you have found out more about the project, please let us know your thoughts by participating in our survey. The survey is open until 11 June 2023."

"Your feedback will be vital in helping to shape how the project is developed, ahead of a planned public consultation on more specific proposals later in the year."

Stevenage-born para-badminton star Gobi Ranganathan believes the High Street improvements will be "well received", saying: "As a wheelchair user, getting around the High Street can be difficult with few crossing points and a lack of dropped kerbs.

"The disabled parking spots outside the bakery can be difficult to use as a wheelchair user as they are on an incline with one small, steep dropped kerb to access the pavement from the parking space.

"Improvements to make it easier to walk, wheel and cycle and navigate between both sides of the street will be well received."
