An afternoon tea event held at Stevenage Indoor Market has raised hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity.
Traders in the market decided to join thousands of other charity afternoon teas across the nation by sticking their kettles on, baking a delicious selection of cakes, and raising money for Breast Cancer Now on Friday, August 25.
Coming together to organise the event - and a charity raffle - the traders succeeded in raising a combined total of £750 for the charity, which provides research and care for people affected by breast cancer.
Councillor Myla Arceno, Mayor of Stevenage, said: "It’s lovely to see the traders at the Indoor Market come together to organise events such as these for fantastic causes that are close to a lot of hearts.
"I really enjoyed my cake, a cup of tea and a chat and could see there were lots of others there too, doing exactly the same.

"It was nice to see the afternoon tea so busy with lots of customers stopping by and I wanted to say a big heartfelt thank you to the market traders who kindly organised this event to fundraise for such a worthy cause."

A spokesperson for Stevenage Borough Council (SBC) said: "The traders at the Indoor Market would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved and were overwhelmed by the support in helping them to raise an astonishing £750 for Breast Cancer Now which has been donated to a fantastic cause."
A new group has recently been formed to work on behalf of traders and customers at the indoor market, replacing a previous group
In previous years, the market had a committee which organised events but this had become inactive.
Now, a new group has been formed to work on behalf of traders and customers. They will be working alongside SBC's Market and Town Centre Management Team to run more events and - hopefully - increase footfall in the market.
A number of further events are already planned, including:
- An event marking the 50th anniversary of the market on, Saturday, December 9
- A Macmillan coffee morning on Saturday, September 30
- A craft and farmers market on Saturday, October 7
- A 'Spooktacular' Halloween event on Saturday, October 28
