Ken Follett, the bestselling author, visited Stevenage Central Library this week to celebrate the joy of reading and showcase the wide range of community activities offered at Hertfordshire's libraries.

He was joined at the library on Monday, January 29, by Cllr Myla Arceno, the mayor of Stevenage, and Liz Green, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, who is visiting all 46 libraries in the county between January and March this year.

Ken and Liz were shown around the library by staff members, before they joined the Tea & Chat session which is held every Monday from 10.30am.

Ken read from his latest book, The Armour of Light, and answered a number of questions from the attendees.

He said that he had "really enjoyed" the visit and, speaking about his love of reading and the importance of libraries, added: "I joined the public library in Cardiff when I was 7 years old and I haven't stopped reading since".

Liz Green said: "Libraries are such an important part of our communities and we saw on our visit how much individuals enjoy meeting regularly in a warm space. I'm looking forward to visiting Stevenage Old Town and Knebworth libraries next Monday afternoon.

Liz's library tour is continuing over the next two months, and aims to fundraise for Hertfordshire Community Foundation and raise awareness of the problems faced by those with low literacy.

Stevenage library offers activities including Storytime, Baby Rhyme Time, Meet & Compete and Lego Club.
