A dad facing only months left to live after developing lung cancer is hoping "to make special memories with family and friends", and raise awareness of the killer disease in non-smokers.

Paul Riley, who lives in Stevenage, was diagnosed with stage three advanced  lung cancer in May last year, after a malignant mass measuring 98mm was found by doctors.

His symptoms began as fatigue and a prolonged cough, but progressed to also include extreme breathlessness, chest pain, memory problems and skin rashes.

Having undergone chemotherapy, Paul, 51, was told last week that he only has months left to live.

He said: "Unfortunately, the right lung is not only cancerous, but has increased in size and has attached to the ribs.

"The headaches I've been getting may indicate that it's gone to the brain, so I'm having a scan next week.

"The term the oncologist said is 'you have months.' They are starting me on a new chemotherapy, which he only gives 5 per cent chance, but I'll take that."

A self-employed window cleaner, Paul has been happily married to wife Janine for 17 years, and they have two sons - Ethan, 14, and Flynn, 16.

Paul, who says he tries to live a healthy lifestyle and has never smoked, said: "We have sat the boys down and told them. It was undoubtedly the hardest thing we will ever have to do in our lives. They are devastated.

"We have enjoyed lots of great memories together over the years.

"Our sons have made us proud parents, and still amaze us now.

"Janine has been my rock throughout this whole traumatic experience. She has continued to work as a self-employed cleaner whilst looking after the boys, house, dog, and caring for myself without any question. Unfortunately, she may have to suspend work if I have further treatment, to care for me."

Paul's friend, Martyn Brooks, is running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on April 7, to raise money to help support Paul and his family.

"I would like to support Martyn and also spread awareness of non-smokers' lung cancer," Paul said.

"My life is now limited and I want to make special memories with family and friends.

"Any money raised will help make a difference in the days, weeks and months ahead, for both myself and my beautiful family."
