Together with Create Community, Citizens Advice and GoVolHerts, we’re launching a new community initiative to be there for residents in North Hertfordshire needing advice in their work life.

Moving Forwards Together aims to build the confidence and self-belief of those struggling to find work opportunities. The project aims to help in the development of the skills required to take the next step along the path to employment.

As well as having access to courses, programs and activities designed to build both self-worth and knowledge, candidates can access free 1:1 professional support.

Their challenges and needs will be listened to and understood. From which we’ll develop a tailored action plan; making their next step as achievable as possible.

Common barriers such as access to equipment will be removed, as candidates are able to use shared office facilitates.

In addition, step-by-step support will be available as individuals work to achieve their unique employment goals.

In some cases, it may also be recommended for candidates to explore volunteering roles, in order to build their skillset and meet new people.

Tatiana Campos, the volunteering development lead at GoVolHerts – the home for volunteering in Hertfordshire, says: "Not only is volunteering a wonderful way to do good in our community, it gives volunteers a new sense of purpose.

"There is a wealth of research around the health benefits of volunteering experienced by volunteers!

"It’s also an excellent way to improve employability. Volunteers have the opportunity to try new activities and develop new skills through their role, as well as meeting a whole new community of people.

"Volunteering really does have the power to open doors!"

A study published by the University of Birmingham showed volunteering on a monthly basis to have a positive effect on those moving into employment after one year out of work.

Furthermore, a 2020 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, suggests that adults over the age of 50 who volunteer around two hours per week, benefit from an improved sense of well-being.
