More than a thousand people in Hertfordshire have already opened up their homes to Ukrainians fleeing war, but more hosts are now needed.

With some hosts no longer able to house their guests, Hertfordshire County Council is calling on more people with spare rooms to volunteer.

People hosting Ukrainian guests in Herts can receive hundreds of pounds a month tax-free, depending on the number of guests and the duration of their stay.

In September, the council also increased their 'thank you' payments to the county's hosts.

Becoming a host enables Ukrainians who are already in the country to stay where they have already settled into schools, jobs and the community.

Terry Douris, chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, said: "I was honoured to recently take part in a county vigil marking the start of the conflict.

"Unfortunately, the battle is not yet won, so once more we must collectively dig deep and keep on keeping on.

"One of the key ways residents can do that is by becoming a host for an existing guest in the county through our rematch scheme. You only need a spare room and you could be making the world of difference to a Ukrainian."
