As the centre for voluntary services across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage, we see first-hand the positive impact volunteers make in our community.

From offering companionship to older people, to volunteering at local food banks; providing mentorship to teens or nurturing a local community garden – an army of volunteers are contributing daily to improve the lives of so many in our community.

This week is the 40th anniversary of Volunteers Week. A campaign both celebrating the contributions made by volunteers, whilst also aiming to inspire many more to get involved.

Voluntary organisations play a crucial role in our society. As well as filling gaps in essential services where government programs and private business may fall short, these organisations bring people together, foster community, and provide opportunities for individuals to work in a collective effort to address local challenges.

As well as having a positive social impact, voluntary organisations often play a vital role in environmental conservation and education too, raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices.

A wonderful example of this is Letchworth Garden Shed, who encourage everyone to consider what they buy more thoughtfully and recognise its impact on the environment.

Offering local residents a ‘place to borrow useful things’, their library ranges from DIY and garden equipment to arts and crafts and baby supplies.

Membership is required to borrow from their library at £10 annually, plus a small additional fee, related to each items ‘trickiness to repair’.

After reserving online, members of the public pick up their garden tool, kitchen equipment or other item from the Leys Avenue store, entirely run by volunteers. Once used, cleaned and returned, the product is once again available to be borrowed by the community.

As well as providing an opportunity to reuse items and reduce consumption, Letchworth Garden Shed regularly host events to inspire more thoughtful living.

From free garden tool sharpening to sewing workshops; the organisation relies on the wider community to come forward and volunteer their skills.
