The masterplan for a 900-home development in Letchworth has been approved by North Herts Council.
Landowner Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation wants to build 900 homes, a local centre and a school on 45 hectares of agricultural land next to the Grange Estate.
The site, known as LG1, is allocated for development in North Herts Council's adopted Local Plan.
The Local Plan, adopted in 2022, sets out the council’s strategy for meeting the development needs of the district to 2031. It makes provision for at least 13,000 new homes.
The council's Cabinet and full council have now approved the Strategic Masterplan Framework for LG1, which will now be adopted as a material consideration for any future planning decisions relating to the site.
It follows a consultation process with residents, businesses, councils and organisations.
Graham Fisher, chief executive of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, said: "We are delighted that North Herts Council has given approval to this scheme - it’s been a fascinating journey working with residents to really understand what they want from it.
"I’m really proud of the plan that we’ve presented and am looking forward to sharing more details with you as we press on with this exciting project."
The heritage foundation is now in the process of appointing a delivery partner to bring forward an outline planning application.
