In a month where a coronation hogged the limelight, a group of badminton players from Hertfordshire were crowned double national champions.

The U17 squad, four of which come from across Welwyn Hatfield while there are others from Watford, Letchworth, Hertford and St Albans, and the U19 team, made up of players from Welwyn Hatfield, Stevenage, Barnet, St Albans, Watford, Ware, Hertford and Harpenden, saw off other counties from across the UK to lift the trophies.

Thirty teams started out in the U17 competition but only the eight best sides made it to the finals, held in Redbridge.

Each match was played over the best of 20 games with winners progressing and the losers competing for minor places.

Herts beat Surrey 13-7 in the quarter finals before a 12-8 success against Berkshire put them into the final.

But they didn't let up and even though Nottinghamshire were a stern test, the exceptionally high performance level that had been evident all day from the entire Hertfordshire squad continued, giving them a 14-6 win.

One day later it was the turn of the U19s, with their final held at the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield.

Another eight teams got to that stage but a 12-8 success for Herts over Cheshire moved them into the semi-final.

That looked to be where the double dream would die as the home side found themselves 6-0 down in the early going.

However, a wonderful fightback, featuring some brilliant performances and strong home support, saw them recover to take the win 11-9.

They met Kent in the final and this time it was Herts who got the better start, taking a 4-0 lead after the mixed doubles.

And this time there was no comeback, as Herts were never pegged back, eventually winning 13-7.

A spokesman for the county said: "Thanks to all the coaches and supporters on both days.

"Hertfordshire has a rich Badminton heritage, having produced players that have represented nationally including the Commonwealth and Olympic games.

"Perhaps there is another Olympian amongst our juniors here."
