Stevenage are all set to sign a new left-back - but Steve Evans says Saxon Earley remains on the wishlist only.

The Boro boss has made plenty of signings already during this window but there are still gaps in the squad.

One of those positions is left-back but the club finally look close to answering the question he has faced all summer.

He said: "Every time I speak to my brother-in-law, he keeps saying ‘where's your left back’? Every time I sign a player, he says ‘can he play left-back'?

"But there is one in for a medical, just after lunch, though. Terms have been agreed so we'll see where that goes."

The left-back conundrum has led fans to submit their own desired solution, most of whom plumped for Earley who moved to Plymouth Argyle in January having spent the first part of the season on loan at the Lamex.

Evans smiled knowingly when his name was raised but admitted any potential deal is not on the table just yet.

The boss said: "Saxon is a Plymouth player, isn't he? And you’ve got to give [Steven Schumacher] the chance of looking at all his squad in pre-season.

"But he's going to be on our list, isn't he? We know the kid really well, he knows us, but is it something sitting there today, no."

The Boro man though did reveal two more are well advanced through the pipeline.

Evans said: "We won't stop. We're trying to fill [two] positions, key positions for us, both good players and both competition."
