The charitable side of bowls was on display at Letchworth Garden City this week.

President Bob Hart used their finals day as the platform to present a cheque for £200 to Isobel Otto from Alzheimers Research UK.

He had started the donations on his president's day and monies have been added during the year.

In the competitive part of the finals day, Paolo Biasioli won the Novices Cup, then the pairs with Tony Sinclair and made it a hat-trick by adding the triples with Peter Bailey and Giovanni Cataldo.

The men’s singles was won by Tony Sinclair with Christine Ottaway winning the ladies' competition.

A busy weekend was completed by Letchworth's ladies playing in the County Club League semi-final.

Jill Rogan, Pauline Simmons , Christine Ottaway, Haidee Castle and Lynn Bailey lost that by a solitary point but recovered to claim victory in the third-fourth place play-off.

Baldock Town believe they have achieved a new feat, after winning all six trophies in the Letchworth & District finals.

Jamie Claydon won the champion of champions and Aaron Heath the singles while Martin Roberts and Rob Dempster lifted the pairs title.

Mary Ann Haskins and husband Paul won the mixed pairs while the triples went to Dave Davies, Brian Todd and Mike Parsons.

That trio were then joined by Peter Ellis to complete the set with the Cairns Cup, beating Royston in the final.

A great outdoor season that came to an end with the County League, losing to eventual champions Garston in the semi-final but beating Townsend to finish third.

Datchworth played their final two games of the Stevenage Mixed League.

The first of them, at home to near neighbours Knebworth, resulted in a 55-46 victory.

Ann Edwards, Maurice Gordon and Ian Williams trailed 7-3 after five ends but were level six ends later before going on to win all but two of the remaining ends for a 19-13 success.

Linda Tyler, Julian Hales and Graham Akers were Datchworth's other winning rink of the three played.

They took the first seven ends to lead by 12-0 before easing to a 21-12 win.

The final fixture, also at home, resulted in a 53-46 loss to Stevenage Town.

They still won two of the three rinks played though.

Barbara Williams, Ian Green, Keith Smith and Derek Henley built up an early lead on their way to a 19-13 success while Dickie Jackson, Ann Edwards, Terry Metcalf and Steve Arnold had to fightback from a 11-5 deficit after seven ends.

But they pulled themselves together and closed out a 17-16 win.

Datchworth also played three mixed friendlies.

They won away at Luton Co-Op, 50-48 in a rain-shortened contest.

The teams shared the four rinks equally with the successes of Nicki Berry, Ian Tyler and Graham Akers (17-9) and Howard Carrick, Janet Akers and Skip Keith Smith (14-7) proving crucial.

There was less joy in the two home fixtures.

Northaw & Cuffley stormed to a comprehensive 94-26 success, all four home rinks losing, and a slightly closer 108-80 defeat to Hertford.

They did have two rink wins out of the six played.

Despite losing twice as many ends than they won Linda Tyler, John Spraggett and Skip terry Metcalf managed to keep their losing score down to 11-14.

Mike Marsh, Janet Akers and Clyde Martindill took the lead on the third end and held it all the way to the finish for a 20-8 success.

It was a different story for Celia Gordon, George Campbell and Akers as the lead in their match changed hands five times in the first 10 ends.

That was when they pulled away though, winning 20-10 at the finish.

Howard Garden played their two remaining SML matches as well.

They won 52-46 against Three Horseshoes and ended with another victory, 53-48 against Stevenage Town.

The destination of the SML title is going to the wire with only two games to be completed.

Baldock Town still have the lead but have played all their games, leaving the door open for St Ippolyts to successfully defend their title in their final game with Aston.

Third place is currently Howard Garden but they too could be overtaken as Three Horsheshoes play their final game.

North Herts played their penultimate match of the outdoor season, an away game against  Fairfield over four rinks.

They only won one of them though, a magnificent six shots on the final end giving Len Staples, Simon Tory and Paul Riseborough a 14-13 success.

The defeats on the other three though led to a 56-37 loss overall.
