British Transport Police are investigating after a man found on the railway tracks near Stevenage station was taken to Lister Hospital with "serious injuries" that are "consistent with having been electrocuted".

Hertfordshire police were called to the incident at around 9.45am today, with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service also attending.

It was reported that the man had "fallen from the bridge" carrying Six Hills Way over the railway tracks.

Firefighters rescued the man and power to the tracks was temporarily switched off.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police told us: "We were called shortly before 10am today to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Stevenage station.

"Officers attended alongside colleagues from Hertfordshire police and the ambulance service.

"A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, consistent with having been electrocuted. His next of kin have been informed.

"Officers are investigating the circumstances of the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 with reference 176 of 24 July."
