Voters in North Herts will go to the ballot box on Thursday, May 2.
Every district council seat is up for election in 2024 – across Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock, Royston and the surrounding villages.
Voters have elected their district councillors one-third at a time in most elections since 1980 – with North Herts Council polls in three out of every four years.
But the authority has ditched this “thirds” system.
North Herts Council will instead hold whole council elections every four years – in 2024, 2028, 2032, and so on.
Based on 2021 figures – when councillors agreed to make the move – “all out” votes will save taxpayers roughly £40,000 per year.
The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has also redrawn the ward boundaries in North Herts.
As part of its order, some voters could find themselves in new wards this year.
The number of district council members will rise – from 49 to 51.
Labour is the largest party in North Herts with 19 seats – shy of the 25 seats required for a majority.
The Liberal Democrats have 15 seats.
The two parties run a joint administration – similar to a coalition – with members from both political groups on North Herts Council’s cabinet.
Fifteen Conservative councillors make up the political opposition in the district.
