Boris Johnson has called on voters in Stevenage to back the "wonderful" Alex Clarkson in tomorrow's general election.

In a video published on social media, the former prime minister endorsed Mr Clarkson, Conservative candidate for Stevenage, saying that he would be "a great MP".

But Kevin Bonavia, Labour's candidate for the constituency, hit out at his opponent, saying "any candidate with morals and integrity would not accept an endorsement from someone who broke the law partying during Covid whilst residents here couldn’t visit their dying loved ones".

Mr Johnson, who resigned as PM in 2022 after several scandals including Partygate, said: "It's only by voting for Alex Clarkson ... that we can hope to ensure we don't have a huge Starmergeddon super majority with ever more wokery, more illegal immigration, more pointless, powerless kowtowing to Brussels, and of course, ever higher taxation for you and your family."

It comes after Mr Johnson's first campaign appearance on Tuesday, when he gave a speech at a Conservative rally in Chelsea.

Mr Clarkson said he "warmly welcomes" Mr Johnson's endorsement, and added that the former PM "is right to warn of a sledgehammer Labour majority".

"If the socialists win in Stevenage, it will usher in the most left wing government since the war.

"Every vote in Stevenage counts. My grandmother came here with her family in 1958. Four generations of my family have lived here and worked here.

"I know this constituency, I know its heart lies in its people and I promise to stand up for Stevenage every waking moment to represent its values."

Mr Bonavia described the video as "a desperate attempt to drag a prime minister from the past into this campaign, because the prime minister of the present is deeply unpopular with residents here".

"The message to me has been clear. Whether it’s the Tories of the past, present or future – people feel it’s time for a change. 

"But we only get change if people vote for it on Thursday, July 4. 

"Only Labour offers that change. And I stand ready to deliver it.”

The other candidates standing in Stevenage are Paul Dawson (Green), Peter Hopper (Reform UK), Lisa Nash (Liberal Democrat) and Joshua Smith (Christian Peoples Alliance).
