A yellow heat health warning has been issued for Hertfordshire as temperatures are set to reach up to 30C.
The UK Health Security Agency alert covers the East of England, South East and the Midlands from 5pm today (July 18) until 11pm Saturday (July 20).
It warned that the high temperatures will place extra pressure on healthcare services, with the threat of increased deaths of people aged over 65.
Temperatures in many Hertfordshire towns such as Watford, St Albans and Stevenage will reach 30C at 4pm tomorrow (July 19), according to Met Office forecasts. The mercury will remain hot into Saturday, dropping slightly to between 24C and 25C across the county.
The UKHSA warned of high temperatures inside buildings, which it said could affect people working inside and put “vulnerable people” living alone at additional risk.
Hospitals and care homes may also see higher than recommended temperatures for providing care services.
Official advice from the government states however that people should continue with their usual routine during a yellow alert.
It is the second tier in the system, above green or no alert, and below amber for an increased response, and red for a significant risk to life.
