Virgin Media is coming under fire from Herts residents who are claiming “really poor” coverage is leaving them without broadband connection.

Hitchin residents have voiced their concerns on the Virgin Media community forum with some suggesting broadband outages between “10 to 12 hours” a day for the last month (August, 2024).

George Thomas, Hitchin, who began the forum thread told the Comet: “It is scandalous, dishonest practices are going on with customers.

“They are sending out engineers to replace routers, but the issue is not in people’s homes, it’s in the Hertfordshire area.”

"It would be the best day of my life if it got fixed, so I can work as normal," said George. (Image: PA/Rui Vieira)

George described the connection as “totally unusable” when outages occur - particularly for those gaming, or working from home as the broadband connection becomes “really poor”.

Since posting over a month ago on the forum, the Hitchin thread has grown with 80 replies between Virgin administrators and concerned residents. Also prompting a separate St Albans forum and thread containing 17 replies.

According to George, a “community forum moderator” employed by Virgin, recommended that he got in touch with the ISPreview as he has submitted 10 separate queries that are “yet to fix” his connection.

Several Facebook users also voiced their concerns regarding their Virgin Media coverage in Hitchin.

One user commented: “It (Virgin Media) has been awful since I’ve had it, and it never seems to get resolved, I will be changing.”

While another said: “I’m in SG4 and have had issues on and off for months. Virgin is fast but drops in and out multiple times during the day.”

George pays over £50 per month for his Wi-Fi connection and other Virgin Media customers can expect to pay at least £24 a month for their broadband.

This afternoon, Friday, September 6, George is meeting with Hitchin MP Alistair Strathern to discuss the issue further.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Due to a technical fault a small proportion of customers in the area may have occasionally experienced an intermittent service.

They added, a team of engineers have “fixed” the issue and will “continue to monitor” the situation”.
