An 82-year-old altar server has been honoured for his 50-year dedication to the Catholic Church.

Alex Rebello, from Letchworth, was awarded the Gold Medal from the Archconfraternity of St Stephen on Sunday, November 17.

This is the highest honour from the Guild of St Stephen.

He received this at St Hugh of Lincoln Church for his more than 50 years of service.

Hundreds of parishioners attended the Mass to see him honoured on the day of the church’s patron saint, St Hugh.

A parishioner said: "We are all so very proud of Alex.

"Comes rain or shine, snow or fog, Alex cycles to church every morning, serves at the altar and makes sure all is in order in the sacristy.

"His commitment is unwavering and he always has a smile on his face.

"We are so lucky and very grateful to have him."
