Stotfold earned the bragging rights after a home win over neighbours Arlesey Town.
The Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division sides are separated by less than five miles on the road but with a gap of 18 places and 35 points prior to kick-off.
That gap is now 38 after goals from former Blue Archie Sayer and Codi-Lee Spavins gave the Eagles a 2-0 success in front of a crowd of 322 at New Roker Park.
They stay top, five points clear of Leighton Town but having played five games more.
Perhaps more crucially though they are six clear of St Panteleimon, who have played two more, and seven above Dunstable Town, though they have two games in hand, in the race for the promotion play-off.
Arlesey's loss leaves them second from bottom, one point behind Hoddesdon Town who were beaten 3-0 by Leverstock Green.
In fact it is pretty much as you were in the relegation scrap.
Bottom club and increasingly doomed London Colney lost 3-0 to Dunstable while Colney Heath put up a good fight but were eventually beaten 2-1 by Leighton.
The only side who did their hopes of beating the drop were Baldock Town who won 2-1 at home to St Panteleimon.
Newman Carney and Harry Dollimore got their goals to lift them nine points above landlords Arlesey.
In Division One, Letchworth Eagles scored a 2-1 victory over Buckingham Athletic while Codicote won 4-0 at struggling AFC Caddington in League Two.
The Cod's scorers were Michael Carter (two), Callum Frater and Alfie O'Dell.
Hitchin Town suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Tamworth in Southern League Premier Division Central but there was still positives to take for Mark Burke's men.
For one, the visiting Lambs have lost just five times this season and are now nine points clear of Leiston in second.
And yet it took a penalty from Dan Creaney a minute from half-time to settle the contest in their favour.
Three minutes earlier the same player had been given another chance to score from 12 yards but on that occasion Hitchin goalkeeper Charlie Horlock watched it fly over the top.
Tamworth did have plenty of pressure throughout the contest but the Canaries defended superbly at times.
They now have a week off before returning with a trip to second-from-bottom Hednesford Town on March 18.
