The first weekend of 2024 proved a frustrating one for football teams across north Hertfordshire.
Things looked to be going well for Hitchin Town on Friday night when they got themselves 2-0 in front away to Nuneaton Borough.
However, the hosts pulled one back on 54 minutes through the veteran Leroy Lita and then snatched the win away for the Canaries when Matthew Stenson equalised for 2-2, deep into stoppage time.
Town had scored their two goals in 20 minutes of the first half.
Finley Wilkinson had put them in front inside two minutes heading home after a Stephen Gleeson free-kick, and then Daniel Emovon made it two, finishing off a good passing move.
If you want goals in 2024 then Stotfold seems to be the team to go and watch.
Having romped to a 6-0 New Year's Day win at home to Biggleswade, they added another four at Aylesbury United.
The unfortunate part this time was they conceded four too as the hosts grabbed a 4-4 draw.
Brayden Daniel scored first for Aylesbury but Robbie Buchanan equalised with 10 minutes of the first half remaining.
There was still time for two more goals, Kennedy Feyi restoring United's lead before Connor Vincent dragged Stotfold level again, three minutes into stoppage time.
The Eagles then got their noses in front for the first time with James Peters on target on 49 minutes.
That advantage lasted 11 minutes and was then wiped out with 17 minutes to go. Daniel going on to collect his hat-trick.
However, Buchanan was on hand to grab his fifth league goal and ensure a point each.
There was no joy in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division either as both Arlesey Town and Baldock Town lost.
The Blues had won their previous two fixtures, the first under new manager Tommy Cooney, but they went down 4-1 at London Lions.
Baldock meanwhile were beaten 2-1 at home to Harpenden Town, although their goal was special, a volley from Archie O'Brien on the hour that flew over the keeper's head to halve the deficit.
In Division Two, Codicote's home game with Berkhamsted Raiders was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
The Cod have had their application for promotion to step six of the pyramid granted though.
It means if they can win the league, they will be moved to Division One.
